Installing
Open the downloaded MenuBarToggle.dmg and drag Menu Bar Toggle onto Applications. The first time you open it, macOS says it was downloaded from the internet: click Open. Apple has checked the app for malware before it was published (it is notarized), and you only see that question once.
Updating
Choose Check for Updates… in the app's menu. It opens the updates page, which says whether a newer version is out. To update, quit Menu Bar Toggle, download the new version and drag it onto Applications, choosing Replace. Your shortcut, rules and other settings are kept.
Right-clicking the bar does nothing
The click only counts once the bar is actually showing under the pointer. Move to the very top of the screen, wait for the bar to slide in, then right-click an empty part of it (not a status icon). Also check that "Right-click Menu Bar to Toggle" is ticked in the app's menu.
The bar still appears in a full-screen app
Full-screen apps use a separate half of the macOS setting ("in full screen"), which Menu Bar Toggle leaves alone. Change it under System Settings › Menu Bar.
"Taken by…" when recording a shortcut
That combination is already used by macOS, by a shortcut in the Shortcuts app, or by another app. Pick another, or free it in the place named — combinations with ⌃ or ⌥ are the least likely to clash.
A per-app rule never fires
Some apps show their windows from a helper that isn't the app you launched — a remote-desktop client, for example, may open each session in a separate viewer app. Add the app that is actually in front; it appears under Recently Used once you have used it.
What it runs on
macOS 13 Ventura or later, on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
Uninstalling
Untick Launch at Login in the app's menu, choose Quit Menu Bar Toggle, then drag Menu Bar Toggle from Applications to the Trash. Its settings are one small file, ~/Library/Preferences/com.reisinger.MenubarToggle.plist, which you can delete too. The menu bar setting stays however you last left it; change it under System Settings › Menu Bar.
